How Ask Statum works

Ask a plain question about any US bank. Get an answer traced to the bank's own regulatory filing, and a read on where it's heading. Here's what happens underneath.

1. It starts with the filing

Every US bank files a quarterly FFIEC Call Report with federal regulators, the same statement examiners use. That is Statum's source. Every number you see comes from it. Nothing is estimated, nothing is scraped from headlines, nothing is invented.

2. Statum computes what the regulators compute, then looks ahead

From the raw filing, Statum computes the regulatory-grade ratios and the Statum grade the way the regulators do, and it does it ahead of the official UBPR release. Then it goes where the incumbents stop: a machine-learning model, validated out of sample, forecasts where each bank's grade is heading 18 months out and reads the turn early on the banks that are moving. That model grew out of Amberoon's work with the FDIC on predicting bank distress.

3. You ask in plain English

No specialist software, no query syntax. Ask the way you'd ask a colleague, "how is my bank doing," "which banks look exposed," "where is this one headed." Statum answers with the number, its source, and the forecast where it applies. Ask a follow-up and it keeps the thread.

4. Every figure is checked, and it won't guess

Each figure is tied back to the filing before you see it. If Statum can't stand behind a number, or you ask about a bank it doesn't cover, it tells you plainly rather than invent an answer.

What it covers

Roughly 4,400 US banks that file FFIEC Call Reports. Not credit unions, foreign banks, or holding companies. See the About page for the full scope, or view plans and pricing.
